MUSTANG REPORT # 3, Part ii

The CIA Versus "Expendable Elite" Part Two

Who or What caused my men to turn against me?

by Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Marvin, US Army (Retired)
Author of Victory Edition - Expendable Elite - One Soldier's Journey Into Covert Warfare

I will begin by recalling a pleasing item that served to reinforce my drive to continue my crusade to make people aware of those illegal activities perpetrated by our government that I was personally involved in or had direct knowledge of. It was on 9 September 1991 that Alicia Cooper, director of the West Coast office of the International Rescue Committee, honored me with a "Certificate of Appreciation" and wrote in a cover letter that it was a “small token of recognition for all you have done and all you have accomplished in the years since 1978. I do believe that you have done more than any one individual can possibly do vis a vis such powerful forces.” Ms Cooper was referring to my efforts to help make possible the immigration of a number of South Vietnamese into this country, each of whom had been a vital part of my independent Special Forces operation in An Phu District, South Vietnam. One effort in particular involved the clearing of General Quang Van Dang of the many trumped up, fictitious charges of heinous crimes that our government had levied against him shortly after he came to our rescue in June 1966. General Dang saved many lives by turning back a well armed ARVN regiment that had been sent to destroy my camp shortly after I unilaterally aborted the CIA's plans to assassinate Cambodian Crown Prince Sihanouk. After receiving no action from the State Department when I demanded an investigation to clear General Dang, I wrote then President George H. W. Bush a strong letter demanding that he order a government-wide investigation, which he did and it cleared General Dang of all wrong doing and ordered that he be issued a permanent entry visa. I went to Canada and brought him across the border from Montreal, Quebec in September 1989.

Next important item on my agenda was the long and most difficult fight to get LTC Phoi Van Le into this country after Henry Kissinger, a board member of the International Rescue Committee, ordered that all activities help Phoi Van Le immigrate cease and desist. He was not to come to the USA. I could only assume that the reason our government didn't want Colonel Le in this country was his personal testimony: he was the only many alive, other than the CIA's Walter Mackem, who could corroborate in testimony before Congress that he and I were asked to assassinate Cambodian Crown Prince Norodum Sihanouk in June 1966 by Walter Mackem.

It was a courageous woman, Dr. Judith Ladinsky, who was recommended by Alicia Cooper as someone in a powerful position who could help Colonel Le that went to Vietnam and took action to make certain that Phoi Van Le, his wife and four children were issued permanent entry visas and were brought to the United States in a legal fashion. They are all now U.S. citizens!

Not a one of my men who I was in communication with, men whose very lives were saved by General Dang, would so much as call or write him to thank him after I provided address and telephone number, assuming they would be anxious to thank him for saving his life. Then, in 1991, I would learn that not a one of those same men (John Strait, James Taylor or Richard Sirois) would willingly lend a hand to help Colonel Phoi Van Le, a real military leader who they fought and worked alongside in An Phu, get into this country. I attempted, in May 1991, to reach one of the senior team members who had served with me. His wife answered the telephone and was very straight forward in telling me that her husband could not talk to me - anytime. If he talked to me, she said in a halting voice, they would lose their retirement pay. Not possible but to the wife it was a serious threat worth their caution.

I then wrote James A Taylor telling him that I was “disappointed and shocked” that my team members had allowed themselves to be intimidated, and I told him “Silence is an act of complicity if one is hiding pertinent truths. My five best friends died in South Vietnam,” I added, concluding “I could use some help, Jim.” There was absolutely no response.

I wonder: what agency or office of our government convinced these men that they were not to recognize nor thank a true hero - General Dang - for saving their lives? I feel in my heart that it had to have been the CIA or the Special Operations Command, not wanting the truth to be known regarding the plot to assassinate Prince Sihanouk and the fact that forces were sent by the CIA to destroy my camp and kill all of us that were in it.

On 31 December 1994 I wrote James Dean, Administrator of the Special Forces Association (SFA), sent him a copy of Martha Raye’s Foreword and that part of Chapter 7 (Wait for the Southern Wind) “that leads up to and includes Colonel Maggie’s visit to my camp.” I also sent him a copy of my 21 March 1994 article The CIA in need of a watchdog of its own along with a color photo of Colonel Maggie and me taken in An Phu.

In response to my letter, James Dean wrote me on 29 July 1995, thanked me for my patience and told me “I enjoyed Chapter 7 very much, written like a man who was on the ground and knows of what he speaks. Maggie’s foreword was a piece of art, her language is ours, as she was.

"I wish you luck with the book.” He went on to write “I will keep your articles on the Agency [CIA] and preserving the flag for possible future inclusion in the Drop. We have a great display of Col. Maggie artifacts in the SFA Memorial Building and that is where your photo will go.”

It is interesting to note that my signed copy of seven pages of Chapter 7 [now Chapter 6 in Expendable Elite] that I had sent to Mr. Dean included:

1) In a box just below the title “WAIT FOR THE SOUTHERN WIND” was the following statement: [Special Forces Team A-424, Independent Operations out of CIDG Camp Dan Nam, located in An Phu District, Chau-Doc Province, South Vietnam January 1966]

2) The telling of the 9 Feb 66 total destruction of the Dong-Co-Ki village office building by a VC sapper squad. Photo is included in the back photo pages of Expendable Elite.

3) Truth about enemy activity: “But there was still the night to get through. [Major Phoi] no sooner hung up the phone before we heard the rumble of multiple rocket and mortar projectiles exploding along the border. The VC were probing all our western outposts from Vinh-Hoi to Khanh-Binh. Already on full alert, we responded with mortar fire and counter-fire within seconds, no doubt surprising the enemy, who’d planned on catching us off guard with their salvos.

“No part of the border escaped the midnight madness of the VC as they fired hundreds of rockets and mortar rounds, harassing every FOB and PF outpost in the vicinity with everything they had, including small arms and machine gun fire.”

4) The whole story of Colonel Maggie’s 12 January 1966 visit to our camp, the fact that two .50 caliber bullets had hit her chopper on the way into our camp and that she helped Dick Sirois treat wounded in our camp dispensary before coming into the team room where she chatted with the team.

Isn’t it interesting that James Dean and the Plaintiffs, in court, claimed our camp was so peaceful with no enemy activity to speak of and that Martha Raye never visited our camp and never carried a black bag as shown in photos in my book? Booby Deaver, their lead attorney, went so far as to call Martha Raye, who all of us in the Green Berets during the 60s loved and called Colonel Maggie, "Illiterate" that she could not "read or write."

In April of 1997 Raymond Johnson visited the SFA “Team House” at Fort Bragg where all Green Berets like to visit and then wrote and asked me to send “some pictures” to the SFA’s Jimmy Dean for possible display in the Team House. On 13 October of that same year, acknowledging Raymond Johnson's request as the inspiration, I sent photos, the battle map of 19 May 1966, Weapons, Ammunition and Equipment status report for May, 1966 and combat statistics covering the period 1 Jan66 through 31 Jul 66. It was all true and sent for their use.

I called Raymond Johnson on the 25th of July 1997, had a good talk, got his mailing address and told him I would send him a copy of the latest manuscript for my book which included input from John Strait and Richard Sirois. I mailed the manuscript, some personal photos, and articles No Laughing Matter and On a Mission along with a Background Information and Personal Data form for him to complete and return to me.

On 3 August 1997 I called Raymond Johnson. During this conversation Ray said, “I remember going on a mission, Sir. I remember going. I went with myself [and] Major Phoi. Oh Hell, we went into Cambodia and then all of a sudden we walked back. I don’t know who [other Green Beret] went with me." He also said, referring to me “You were real great, you were really good, you were real good.” The very next day I mailed him a letter and enclosed a team photo taken on 4 June 1966, appendix 14, a photo that included John Strait and his wife, Sirois and his wife and me, and my article The CIA in need of a watchdog of its own. Then, 22 days later Ray sent me six color photos that include him, his wife and his home that were taken in 1992 and, more recently, on 24 Aug 97.

None of what Ray said, wrote or sent to me nor any of what John Strait or Richard Sirois had recorded on audio tape and sent to me for inclusion ion the book would have led me to believe they would, some seven years later, sue me for $700,000 for defamation, saying the book was all lies!

I thought back to my telephone conversation on 2 October 1997 with General William P. Yarborough at his home in Southern Pines, North Carolina . I celled, wanting to congratulate him for aiding William Pepper in bringing out the truth about the Dr. King assassination. As I recorded our conversation on audio tape, he told me that William Pepper misrepresented him, that he had nothing to do with the King killing, had no knowledge of the gun-running I had stopped upon my arrival in the 46th SF Company in Lop Buri, Thailand. But, he did affirm that there were CIA “advisors” in the Special Forces Training and that Counter-assassination” was taught the officers. He asked that I call attorney Rudi Gresham and brief him. I did just that and taped it also. Mr. Gresham advised me that he had been General Yarborough’s “Aide” and that he was on the National Advisory Board of the SFA. He said “I can speak on behalf of the U.S. Army, the U.S. Army Special Forces and the Special Forces Association.” He also told me that he was “The national spokesperson for all network affiliates and all newspapers.” He stressed that I should first and foremost be loyal to Special Forces. He asked what I had sent to Congress. I said I would send that information to him, and on 10 October 1997 I wrote Gresham and told him that I had provided Senators Moynihan and D’Amato and Congressmen Matthew McHugh and his successor Maurice Hinchey that all that related directly to my effort to bring South Vietnamese into this country whose presence was not considered desirable by the CIA due to their intimate knowledge of covert operations during the period 1 January through 3 August 1966 in An Phu and that I had also told them of CIA Agent Mackem’s visits to my camp which involved the plot to kill Cambodian Crown Prince Norodum Sihanouk. I enclosed articles: Smoking Gun and No Laughing Matter with its two follow up articles and I referred him to Part 6 of Nigel Turner’s documentary film The Men Who Killed Kennedy – The Truth Shall Make you Free. I also told him of the forced exile of General Dang and a description of “Operation Cherry” – another failed effort to assassinate Sihanouk.

Rudi Gresham made it abundantly clear that all Special Forces should keep all that they were involved in to themselves and not talk to Congress.

Three days later, wanting to stay open and above board, I wrote SFA's Jimmy Dean and enclosed 3 photos, a battle map, combat statistics – 1 Jan 66 thru 31 Jul 66, Weapons, Ammunition and Equipment Status – 31 May 66 and a Grapevine article No Laughing Matter. I mailed copies of this letter to John Eleam, Ray Johnson, John Strait and Jim Taylor.

Over the years I was open and candid with the SFA regarding all these matters and the involvement of Special Forces LTC Robert H. Bartelt and Capt. Ernest Buttler of the 46th Special Forces, Thailand in the conduct of or cover-up of illegal activities that included illegal weapons shipment to CONUS that may have been used in the prelude to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King.. I went on to tell James Dean unequivocally that “I believe it is the duty of any true and loyal Special Forces Officer or NCO to report any and all illegal activities to their commanders, or should it be the commander who is involved in any way, manner, shape or form in illegal activity; that person should report it to the appropriate CID or MI authorities.

My membership in the SFA was revoked on 12 August 1998.

When I began writing post-trial additions to Expendable Elite I framed the new content around the word BETRAYED. After all, I reasoned, why would my own men agree to be plaintiffs and perjure themselves in sworn testimony by disavowing facts they had corroborated on audio tapes they had provided me some 18 years prior?

I discussed this matter of "betrayal" with my friend Brent Selleck, a man who was once himself a Green Beret, and whose judgment I trust. He understood the mindset of a fully trained and experienced Special Forces "Green Beret," and knew that we were to be loyal first and foremost to the Special Forces' mission. He told me not to make the mistake of accusing my men of betrayal. Brent reminded me what I would have done prior to January 1984 had I had been asked to do the same thing my men did. I would have also kept illegal SF or CIA actions secret - especially about them sending so-called "friendly forces" to kill me and my men! He told me straight from the shoulder that before I got "saved" I would have done just as they did. He was right. I explain this in the Victory Edition - Expendable Elite - One Soldier's Journey Into Covert Warfare.

Part 3: Was it the CIA who backed the SFA with secret $?

News from Ron Paul campaign

I received this email from the Ron Paul Campaign today. -Editor/RP

Dear friend,

Since I announced my candidacy for the Republican nomination for president two weeks ago, the response and activity have been exciting. Thank you for your enthusiastic support!

After the day's business is complete here in the U.S. House, I will head to Phoenix this evening for two days of campaigning. I'm looking forward to a busy and productive time there, as we had recently in New Hampshire. Some of our activities in Phoenix will be an appearance on the Charles Goyette show on KFNX; a meeting with the editorial board of the Arizona Republic; a luncheon meeting with several Arizona state legislators; an interview with news anchor Jim Sharpe on KFYI; a fundraising reception; and a brunch meeting with nearly 100 Ron Paul 2008 activists. In addition, I will be interviewed on "Real Time with Bill Maher" on HBO tomorrow night.

On April 11th, our campaign goes to Iowa for two days. More on that trip a little later.

As I mentioned, the response and activity is exciting. Several videos are available on our YouTube channel. Thousands of people are watching those videos every day. Activity on our MySpace grows daily. The number of requests for radio and television interviews increases by the day, as do invitations for speaking engagements. Our web site is updated each day with new items posted on our Daily Update page.

Thank you again for your enthusiastic support. Please encourage family and friends to join our campaign. Ask them to visit www.RonPaul2008.com to be a part of our Hope for America.

Sincerely,
Ron Paul

War with Iran

According to these news reports - most of which are coming from overseas, not in US papers, websites and news agencies - indicate that the US will be going to war with Iran very soon. According to one report, which is gleaned from Russian and French news wires, the war will be launched on April 6. Whether the report is accurate or not, tension with Iran has been growing in recent days, and the Iranian capture of British Marines have only made things worse. What is interesting is that even the Russians no longer support Iran, having grown irritated with what Russian officials called Iran's "anti-American games".

Freedom Quotes VOL. XI

"We must pity the poor wretched, timid soul who is too faint-hearted to resist his oppressors. He sings the song of the dammed: 'I can't fight back; I have too much to lose; I own too much property; I have worked too hard to get what I have; They will put me out of business if I resist; I might go to jail; I have my family to think about.' Such poor miserable creatures have misplaced values and are hiding their cowardice behind pretended family responsibility - blindly refusing to see that the most glorious legacy that one can bequeath to posterity is liberty; and that the only true security is liberty."
~Marvin Cooley

"If the price I must pay for my freedom is to acknowledge that the government was granted the power to infringe on them, then I am not free."
~Paul Anderson

"A hand from Washington will be stretched out and placed upon every man's business; the eye of the Federal inspector will be in every man's counting house. The law will of necessity have inquisitorial features, it will provide penalties. It will create a complicated machinery. Under it businessmen will be hauled into courts distant from their homes. Heavy fines imposed by distant and unfamiliar tribunals will constantly menace the taxpayer. An army of Federal inspectors, spies and detectives will descend upon the state. They will compel men of business to show their books and disclose the secrets of their affairs. They will dictate forms of bookkeeping. They will require statements and affidavits. On the one hand the inspector can blackmail the taxpayer and on the other, he can profit by selling his secret to his competitor."
~Richard E. Byrd, Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates (1910)

"If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a small chance of survival. There may even be a worse case: you may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves."
~Winston Churchill

"If Big Brother comes to America, he will not be a fearsome, foreboding figure with a heart-chilling, omnipresent glare as in 1984. He will come with a smile on his face, a quip on his lips, a wave to the crowd, and a press that
(a) dutifully reports the suppressive measures he is taking to save the nation from internal chaos and foreign threat; and
(b) gingerly questions whether he will be able to succeed."
~Michael Parenti, "Inventing Reality" (1986):

"Yes, we did produce a near-perfect republic. But will they keep it? Or will they, in the enjoyment of plenty, lose the memory of Freedom? Material abundance without character is the path of destruction."
~Thomas Jefferson

"Liberals, it has been said, are generous with other peoples' money, except when it comes to questions of national survival when they prefer to be generous with other people's freedom and security."
~William F. Buckley

"Neither the wisest Constitution nor the wisest laws will secure the liberty and happiness of a people whose manners are universally corrupt."
~Samuel Adams

"Wherever the standard of freedom and independence has been or shall be unfurled, there will be America's heart, her benedictions and prayers, but she goes not abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She is the champion and vindicator of her own."
~John Quincy Adams, 1821

Ron Paul on Achieving Freedom

I have a slight disagreement with one or two this that Rep. Paul makes in the following; however, he clearly supports the Constitution and Bill of Rights in all of these. Just another set of reasons to support a Ron Paul candidacy. -Editor/RP

Congressman Ron Paul, M.D., from a February, 2004, speech delivered at "Evenings at FEE" in Irvington-on-Hudson, New York, and reported in the March, 2004, issue of "NOTES from FEE" published by the Foundation for Economic Education:

AN AGENDA FOR ACHIEVING FREEDOM

"We know that the idea of perfect socialism is an oxymoron. Pursuing utopia throughout the last century has already caused untold human suffering. That's why the clear goal of a free society must be understood and sought or the vision of the authoritarians will face little resistance and will easily fill the void.

There are precise goals we should work for, even under today's difficult circumstances. We must legalize freedom to the maximum extent possible:

1. Complete police protection is impossible; therefore we must preserve the right to own weapons in self-defense.

2. In order to maintain economic prottection against government debasement of the currency, gold ownership must be preserved -- something taken away from the American people during the Great Depression.

3. Adequate retirement protection by the government is limited, if not ultimately impossible. We must allow every citizen the opportunity to control all his or her retirement funds.

4. Government education has clearly failed. We must guarantee the right of families to homeschool or send their kids to private schools and help them with tax credits.

5. Government snooping must be stopped. We must work to protect all our privacy, especially on the Internet, prevent the National ID Card, and stop the development of all government data banks.

6. Federal police functions are unconstitutional and increasingly abusive. We should disarm all federal bureaucrats and return the police function to local authorities.

7. The army was never meant to be used in local policing activities. We must firmly prohibit our presidents from using the military in local law-enforcement operations, which is now being implemented under the guise of fighting terrorism.

8. Foreign military intervention by our presidents in recent years is a costly failure. Foreign military intervention should not be permitted without explicit congressional approval.

9. Competitions in all elections should be guaranteed, and the monopoly powers gained by the two major parties through unfair signature requirements, high fees, and campaign donation controls should be removed. Competitive parties should be allowed in all government-sponsored debates.

10. We must do whatever is possible to help instill a spiritual love for freedom and recognize that our liberties depend on responsible individuals, not the group or the collective or society as a whole. The individual is the building block of a free and prosperous social order."

New Ron Paul website

Now that Ron Paul has officially declared that he is running for president, his campaign has now established an official website. RonPaul2008.com is the online HQ for the Ron Paul campaign. I encourage you to go there and check it out, and see for yourself why I believe this man should be our next president. If you are really serious about having our freedoms and liberties protected, and are dissatisfied by the "major" candidates that are being put forward by the Two-Headed Monster (that would be the Democrats and the GOP), then I suggest that you consider supporting this man for president.

Here's a little bit about Ron Paul, as found at RonPaul2008.com:

Brief Overview of Congressman Paul’s Record
He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.

He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war.

He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.
He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.

Congressman Paul introduces numerous pieces of substantive legislation each year, probably more than any single member of Congress.

So, what reason do you have to NOT support Ron Paul for president?
