IT's Alive! IT's Alive!!!!

This week it was announced that the Department of Homeland Security (or Insecurity, depending on how you want to look at it) has resurrected the highly controversial Information Awareness Office. According to some, this office was killed by Congress in 2003 because it was too blatantly invading the privacy of Americans. As if, not too blatant would have made it OK! Others say IAO went underground for a few years and now has returned.

Whatever the case, this is not a piece of good news. Take a look at the original logo for IAO (it is unclear whether it is still in use, or even has a current logo). Quite interesting to say the least, and I'll let the readers draw their own conclusions regarding it. I will say this much: the Latin phrase on the logo, SCIENTIA EST POTENTIA, means "Knowledge is Power".

Promises Full Patent Review, Tracking Notice, and Chip-Free Option

The top brass at American Express, chagrined at the discovery of its people tracking plans, met with CASPIAN (Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering) last week to discuss the issue. One outcome of the meeting was a promise by American Express to review its entire patent portfolio and ensure that any people-tracking plans be accompanied by language requiring consumer notice and consent.

The meeting was organized after CASPIAN called attention to one of the company's more troublesome patent applications. That patent application, titled "Method and System for Facilitating a Shopping Experience," describes a Minority Report style blueprint for monitoring consumers through RFID-enabled objects, like the American Express Blue Card.

According to the patent, RFID readers called "consumer trackers" would be placed in store shelving to pick up "consumer identification signals" emitted by RFID-embedded objects carried by shoppers. These would be used to identify people, track their movements, and observe their
behavior.

The patent also suggested such people-tracking systems could "be located in a common area of a school, shopping center, bus station or other place of public accommodation."

Allegations of American Express people-tracking blueprints first came to light at a conference sponsored by the Consumer Federation of America in Washington, D.C. last month. There, Dr. Katherine Albrecht, Founder and Director of CASPIAN, revealed the patent pending plans that she and her "Spychips" co-author Liz McIntyre uncovered in their ongoing RFID research.

Soon thereafter, American Express arranged for four of its vice presidents, including the vice presidents of Contactless Payments and Public Affairs, to meet with CASPIAN leaders in a phone conference.

"We are pleased that American Express responded to our concerns," said Albrecht. "It's clear the company is thinking about privacy issues and wants to address them constructively. However, we had hoped that American Express would renounce its people tracking plans altogether and be more sensitive to the fact that placing RFID tags in consumer items, like credit cards, puts consumers at risk for surreptitious tracking by others."

In response to CASPIAN concerns, American Express also promised that it would make a chip-free version of its credit card available to concerned consumers who ask for it.

"Offering a chipless credit card is a positive step and should serve as an example to the rest of the industry," said McIntyre. "Consumers don't like RFID technology. Contrary to American Express ads, most people would rather leave home without it."

Our Military at War - Part One

THE GOOD, BAD & UGLY OF IT ALL

Inasmuch as it is what I also believe to be true, what David Deschesne, Editor and Publisher of the Fort Fairfield Journal of Presque Isle, Maine, states to have been the primary reasons he believes influenced this nation to go to war in the past should be treated as historically important information on which to weigh when considering even the possibility of sending our men and women to war.

With exception of a few remarks regarding WWII, I will devote this part one to what I know to be true based on personal experiential knowledge gained by me in specific situations in combat and in command of certain activities in the Korean war where I served as an Engineer Heavy Equipment Platoon Leader as a Second Lieutenant with the US Army's 185th Combat Engineer Battalion in support of the 1st Marine Division on the western areas north of Seoul.

In Part Two of Mustang Report # 2, I will tell the reader what I know to have been true in the Vietnam War where I commanded Team A-424 in an independent US Army Special Forces operation in South Vietnam having a counterpart Vietnamese Special Forces A Team and six companies of Civilian Irregular Defense Group fighters comprised solely of 792 Buddhist Hoa Haos. I will present documentation and personal corroboration to prove that leaders in our government, from President Johnson, through General Harold K. Johnson to General William Westmoreland and all other officers in senior command positions actually aided the enemy. Yes, they knowingly and in a most heinous and cowardly fashion permitted the enemy sanctuaries where they could kill our forces and our allies from with impunity. I will ask the reader "Where is the truth?" and I will suggest a way they can help to insure that future generations or those serving in this current military force will not have to face what we did in An Phu, South Vietnam in 1966.

I will also discuss what I believe to be true about our invasion of Iraq, our continuing occupation of that nation and our involvement in Afghanistan. I will then pose to the reader possible political/military/industrial planning that is geared to maintaining combat activity for sufficient time and in certain areas that may well be a cleverly developed and perpetrated path to bring about a "One World Order" while purposely excluding actions against three of the greatest perpetrators of human rights abuse - China, Saudi Arabia and North Korea. There will be heaping platefuls of "food for thought" that I pray you digest and ask for wisdom to help redirect the course of this once great nation we call America.

What I do know about World War II leads me to believe that what we did to go to war against Germany and Japan was to save the world from domination by two extremely evil dictators who led the forces of Germany and Japan.against the free world. Would you want to be goose-stepping to the dictates of Adolf Hitler, or would you rather be bowing to the wishes of Emperor Hirohito? The fact that this nation was able to conquer the military might of these two evil despots and yet have the grace to recognize the needs of the common people who had lost so much in the war and who feared virtual slavery in the post war era speaks well for our human nature. We, in fact, did sufficiently of what was right and proper for the very people who had fought and lost a war that their leaders had precipitated, and did so to win their hearts and minds was indeed admirable. As an end result we now enjoy having them as world partners in a joint struggle to bring about a peaceful solution to the many conflicts that now exist.

Is there one of you who reads this and who is an American citizen who would truly rather that Hitler had won WWII? Any Jew would cringe at the thought! Though there were no doubt some unhealthy, unethical and unpatriotic alliances between wealthy persons in the United States and foreign officials of nations that would become our deadly enemies, the overwhelming patriotic and certainly courageous response by persons of all ages and social status allowed this nation to put together a military force second to none and a civilian population dedicated to the support of what was necessary to win that war and maintain a free and democratic Republic here in the "good old USA!"

Korean War: General Douglas MacArthur had the experience, wisdom and judgment to have led our armed forces to victory against North Korea and China if he had been permitted to do so by President Harry Truman. We would not have the situation that presently exists in those same communist nations whose civil rights records are atrocious and whose people, for the most part, are virtual slaves to evil leaders who now are engaged in a military build up that is inadequately reported to the people of this nation. The South Koreans were dependant on our superior military might to defeat their foes who had invaded from the north. They assumed, as most Americans did at the time, that we would lead the way to help them reunite north and south in a democratic nation. Instead they were forced to accept a status quo non-victory stalemate that resulted in their having to defend a mine strewn 38th parallel while their neighbors to the north continue to spend vast amounts of money to develop and build an atomic bomb with which to attack the South Koreans and take their land for a bigger and greater communist nation. Isn't it strange that peace-loving nations continue to pour economic aid into North Korea, even knowing that their governing officials ignore much of the need of their people while spending huge amounts of money in an effort to reach a point where they will one day feel ready to attack the freedom South Koreans now enjoy?

Attention North Carolinians!!

I have taken a lot of flack in the past for being opposed to a Federal amendment that defines marriage as being between one man and one woman. I believe, as the Constitution and Bill of Rights clearly state, that this area belongs to that of the individual states, not the Federal Government. And, rightfully so, many states have now passed amendments that define marriage as being between a man and a woman.

Currently, we are fighting to do the same thing here in North Carolina. If you live in North Carolina, I urge you to write to your state senator and ask him to support S13. The bill was side-lined on Monday and placed in a "dead" committee - it has not met in nearly 6 years - by the president pro tempore of the NC Senate, Marc Basnight. Please also write senator Basnight asking him to have it brought before the floor for a vote.

Earlier this week I emailed my state senator, Phil Berger, and Senator Basnight. Senator Berger is a co-sponsor of the bill and was glad to receive my support. Senator Basnight on the other hand responded with the slick cop-out that liberals normally give: he used the Constitution as his excuse. Liberals typically use the Constitution whenever it meets their agendas, then forget about it the rest of the time. How convenient. Senator Basnight's response was rather lengthy, and I took this as a sign that he is under heavy attack from the voters of the Old North State.

That great Highland philosopher, Lachlan McLachlan, propounded a number of irrefutable laws of life, the universe and everything.

#1- Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.
