Let's be clear. There was never any controversy about violent extremists and bigoted criminals and domestic terrorists being a serious concern to public safety. The problem came in lumping together such unsavory elements with patriotic Americans who dissented against the Obama administration, distrusted expansive federal power or supported the right to bear arms and other traditional conservative and pro-liberty values. As I explained back in March, such efforts to cast such a wide net have historically had a chilling effect on free speech and undermined the civil liberties of American political activists, whether on the "extreme right" or the "radical left."
